Typography plays a big role in the design world, and I have always struggled with finding the right typeface or customizing typography for projects. The goal of this project was to create a series of custom wordmarks to help strengthen and refine my typography skills. With recently moving to Minneapolis, I decided to choose words related to the state of Minnesota.
A "Jucy Lucy" or ("Juicy Lucy") is a cheeseburger that features the cheese stuffed inside the meat patty instead of on top, resulting in a melted core of cheese within the patty. In a longstanding battle, local mainstays Matt's Bar and the 5-8 Club continue to fight for the title of the invention of this delicious burger. Both bars have slightly different versions of the famous burger — with the first difference being the spelling. Matt’s Bar removes the “i” in “Juicy”, while the 5-8 Club uses the normal spelling. The second difference is the 5-8 Club offers a variety of cheese options for the middle of the burger, and Matt’s Bar strictly uses American cheese. No matter which bar you visit to try this famous dish, the winner in this fight — by unanimous decision — is your tastebuds!
This custom wordmark brings a retro feel to the table with the concept lying within the cheesy core between the words Jucy Lucy. I chose to spell Jucy Lucy without the "i" because my favorite cheese-stuffed burger is grilled up at Matt's Bar.
