I've always been interested in lettering and handwriting. Everyone has their own unique style, and I wanted to work on developing my own. After many hours of practicing letterforms and figuring out ways that different letters can interact while maintaining readability, I thought it'd be neat to create a bigger piece (rather than just writing random words in my sketchbook all day).

"Old School Gumption. New School Knowledge." was a nice challenge because it has a good variance in word length. Naturally, the diamond shape formed as I was refining with each pass.

The sketch process was challenging. I started out small just to figure out how each letter would fit and how every word would balance well with the others. After each sketch, I scanned it and printed it at a larger size to further refine.

Once I got the lettering to a point that I was happy with, I did a final pass to ensure clean lines. Then I scanned it and printed the final piece on a laser printer. The toner will transfer off the paper and onto a surface when exposed to acetone. Using acetone, I transferred the lettering to a linoleum block. Many hours later and a couple blisters deep, It was ready to ink up and print.
